Since 2002 Ragusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Noto, Modica, Scicli and Caltagirone. The city was almost entirely destroyed by the catastrophic 1693 earthquake and rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style, creating one of Europe's most extraordinary urban landscapes.
